Our listener Elizabeth sent us a voice memo celebrating how she upgraded her life (and when we say life we mean her bath mat).

Elizabeth:   I’m 32 years old. I’m not quite an elder millennial, but I’m also way past the acceptable age for having the same bath mat I’ve had since I moved out of my parents house nearly 11 years ago.  Now, just because I had the same bath mat for over a decade doesn’t mean I didn’t take care of it. I washed it regularly, just like I did with my towels and sheets, so much so that the fabric was thinning and tattered.

It was also initially an off white color, which had turned even more off white as the years went by and then turned a yellowish tint because I bleached it, even though it probably wasn’t quite white enough to bleach.  Anyway, it recently occurred to me that it didn’t have to be this way. I have no emotional attachment to this bathmat.

Even with inflation, a new bathmat surely couldn’t be that expensive, right? Fortunately, I was right. I bit the bullet and invested in a blue ombre bath mat because yes, even though I live in a suburb of a major city that is hours away from the ocean, I like to pretend that I live at the beach so this mat had to have a coastal vibe.

It arrived in the mail and it was even more perfect than I had imagined. I didn’t know it was possible for a mat to be this soft. Was my old bath mat this soft at any point? I couldn’t tell you. But this new bathmat, I usually wear orthopedic flip flops around the house because a girl needs some back support.

But now, when I get ready for the day or get ready for bed at night, I live on the edge and I stand on this mat in bare feet. I feel like I’m walking on a cloud, or cotton balls, or something really, really soft. I don’t know what. But anyway, all this to say, if you’ve been thinking about upgrading your bathmat, just do it.

It brought me way more joy than I had ever imagined it would bring.
